Das mittlere Altmühltal weist neben dem Vorkommen im Aischgrund die meisten Storchenpaare in ganz Bayern auf. Die LBV-Umweltstation Altmühlsee hat daher drei Radwege ins Leben gerufen, die an diesen Storchenhorsten entlangführen.
Die hier beschriebene Route 2 (orangene Beschilderung) ist ein etwa 20km langer Rundweg um den Altmühlsee mit Start und Ziel in Gunzenhausen.
