General Tips
Actionbound helps you create and play your own scavenger hunt, paper chase, or interactive quiz. You can use the Bound Creator to make your Bounds. You’ll find it at www.actionbound.com.
You’ll have to register on the website to create Bounds. You’ll need the Actionbound app to play; it’s available free of charge for both iOS and Android.
Creating Bounds for private, non-commercial use (e.g. a birthday or bachelor party) is free of use.
We offer special licenses for commercial use, as well as for education and for non-profits. You can use a test account to try Actionbound free of charge for up to two weeks.
If you have questions about the licenses, please contact inquiry@actionbound.com.
Some of the functions described here are only available with a specific license. We’ve marked them like this: *.
Registration and Login
You’ll need a valid email address to register for Actionbound.
- Visit www.actionbound.com
- Click on Not logged in at the top right
- Click on Register
- Choose the appropriate license or start with a trial- or private account.
→ After you’ve chosen a license, fill out the form. You can get started after your license has been activated.

- Click on Create Account.
From now on, you can login by clicking on the menu at the top right.
The Bound Dashboard
After registering, you’ll end up at the dashboard. If you leave the dashboard, you can get back to it by going to the menu in the top right, and then clicking on My Bounds.
The Dashboard shows you all of the Bounds you’ve created.
Creating Folders*
You can use folders to keep your Dashboard nice and tidy.
- Click on the folder symbol on your dashboard.
- Give the folder a name and choose a color.
Now you can drag and drop Bounds into your folder, or just create them directly in the folder. You can change the name and the color of the folder at any point by clicking on the wrench icon.
You can click on the same icon when you want to delete the folder. You’ll have to enter the name of the folder** and decide whether the Bounds it creates should be deleted as well, or whether they should be moved up one level.
Merging Bounds*
You can merge multiple Bound into one big bound using the Dashboard.
Tip: Separate your Bounds into stages before you merge them together. That way, it’ll be easier to organize them later.
- Click on the merge symbol in the dashboard.
- Type a new name and a URL for the bound in the window.
- Drag and drop the Bounds you want to merge into the window.
- Click on Merge Bounds.

!!randomplayer!! - The name of a player will be displayed at random. If the Bound has only one player, their name will be displayed.
!!team!! - the name of the team will be displayed
Switches
A switch can be activated for any Bound you choose. You can use it to determine the conditions under which the element in the Bound will be shown.
For every element you can set multiple conditions and determine whether only a single condition all conditions must be met in order for the element to be shown in the Bound.
If you have activated switches, you’ll find more options and settings under Switch tab on the menu.
One more time: If the switch isn’t activated, the element will be shown in the course of the Bound. When the switch is activated, the element will be shown if specific conditions are met.
A Bound with switches requires extensive testing in order to ensure that all switches work as desired!
Activating switches
- Go to the Bound’s settings
- Click on „Activate Switches“ on the right side under „Switches“
Attaching Multiple Conditions to a Single Element
Any switch can have as many conditions as you want. You can determine whether all conditions must be met, or whether a single condition is sufficient.
Warning!
If there are other elements of the Bound that are set to depend on switches on this particular element, they may not be displayed, as the switches will not be able to activate.
Conditions Dependent on Other Elements of the Bound
You can make the display of elements dependent on already existing elements (referred to here on as referring elements.) For example, you can use this feature to make an element visible if and only if a question in the referring element was answered correctly or only if a certain number of points were scored, for example.
- Open or create the desired element
- Click on the Switch tab
- Activate the switch
- Click on Add condition
- Choose Element
- Choose the desired referring element
The Conditions in Detail
The following conditions can be selected for each element. The exact conditions depend on the referring element.
Reached (for any element)
The element is shown in the Bound when the referring element either has (Yes) or has not (No) been displayed.
Use Case: You’d like to show an element only if a different element (in a flexible stage, for example), has already been shown.
Necessary Time (for any element)
The Element will be displayed in the Bound when the element has been displayed for either more than or less than a period of time you designate.
Use case: You can use this to show additional information if, for example, players have spent less than two minutes in a particular referring element.
Solved (With quiz as a referring element)
The element will be displayed in a Bound if the referring element either has (Yes) or has not (No) been properly solved.
Tip: If the referring element was not displayed, it is automatically treated as not having been solved!
Answer (for quizzes and polls as referring elements)
The element will be displayed in the bound when the answer in the referring element contains the word, letter, or number that you designate.
Tip: Exact requires that exactly the content that you designate, nothing more and nothing less. „Contains“ requires the content defined here. Additional words, letters, or numbers don’t affect the result. Does not contain means that none of the designated content can be present.
Points Attained (with Quiz Questions as Referring Elements)
The element will be displayed in the Bound depending on when there are either fewer than, less than, or exactly X points.
Tip: The selection options here are NOT less than or equal to. So if you want to display the element for all players with 500 points or fewer, you must enter „Fewer than 501.“
Tip: If you would like to select a range of points, you can define two conditions, one „fewer than“ and one „more than,“ then select, all conditions must be met.
Number of solutions provided (with tasks as the referring element)
The element is displayed in the bound if the number of texts, images, videos, or audio files entered into the referring element is fewer than, more than or exactly X.
Tip: The selection options here are NOT less than or equal to. So if you want to require a player to upload at least one item, you must set the condition to, more than 0.
Found (with location-finding and code-scanning referring elements)
The element is shown in the Bound when the location has been reached or the QR-code has been scanned („yes“), or else when these conditions are not met (no).
Stage completed (Stage as a referring element)
The element will be displayed in the Bound when a stage has been played in its entirety.
Conditions Dependent on Players
You can display elements depending on the team’s current location, how many points they have scored, or how many players there are on a team.
Use Case: You would like to display an element only if the players are too far away from a designated location, in order to remind them that they are supposed to go to the tower in the middle of the square– but only if they have collected just a few points.
- Open the desired element
- Click on the Switch tab
- Activate the switch
- Click on Add condition
- Choose Players
- Choose the desired functions
The Conditions in Detail
Points already Scored
The element will be shown in the Bound when the number of points reached is greater than, fewer than, or exactly X.
Tip: The selection options here are NOT less than or equal to. So if you want to display the element for all players with 500 points or fewer, you must enter „Fewer than 501.“
Tip: If you would like to select a range of points, you can define two conditions, one fewer than and one more than, then select, all conditions must be met.
Number of Players
The element will be shown in the Bound when the number of players who enter the names in a group Bound is more than X, fewer than X, or exactly X.
Tip: Once again, the selection options are NOT less than or equal to. So when you want to show an option for teams of at least three players, you should enter more than 2.
Distance to Coordinates
The element will be displayed in the Bound when the players stop in the area of coordinates you designate. The radius can be set to be more than or less than X meters, kilometers, feet, or miles from a specified location. As in the find a location tasks, the coordinates can be selected on the map.
Conditions Dependent on Time
You can make elements dependent on the elapsed playtime, or on the date, time of day, or day of the week.
Use case: This element should only be shown after the 12th of April 2020 and only on Thursdays between 12:00PM and 3:00PM.
- Open the desired element
- Click on the Switch tab
- Activate the switch
- Click on Add condition
- Choose Time
- Choose the desired function
The Conditions in Detail
Elapsed Playtime
This element will be shown in the Bound when more or less than the amount of time you has designated has elapsed.
Tip: If you would like to define a time range, than you should generate two conditions, one shorter than and one longer than and select, all conditions must be met.
Time
The element will be displayed in the bound if it is earlier than or later than a designated time.
Tip: If you want to designate a time range, you should create two conditions, one before X o’clock and one after Y o’clock, then select, all conditions must be met.
Date
The element will be displayed when a Bound is played before, after, or on a specific date.
Tip: If you want to define a range of dates, you must create two conditions, one after and one before, then select, all conditions must be met.
Day of the Week
The element will be displayed in the Bound if the Bound either is or is not played on a specific day of the week.
Tip: If you want an element only to be displayed on the weekend, for example, then you should create two conditions, one for Saturday and one for Sunday, and then choose, at least one condition must be met.
Conditions Dependent on Special Settings
An element can also be displayed at random, or depending on the operating system of the device used to play the Bound.
Use Case: You would like to give teams different tasks at random, or you’ve thought of a task that can only be completed with an iPhone.
- Open the desired element
- Click on the Switch tab
- Activate the switch
- Click on Add condition
- Choose Special
- Choose the desired function
The Conditions in DetaiL
Probability
You can determine what percentage chance an element in the Bound has of being played.
Tip: With multiple tasks in a row that have all been given percentage chances of being played, but which are only displayed when the others have not been displayed, you can assign different tasks at random to different teams.
Device
The element will be shown in the Bound when a team plays on an Android or iOS device.
Stand-by-Switch
With a stand-by-switch, you can ensure that an element only appears if the proper conditions have been fulfilled.
- That means that the game will check whether the proper conditions have been obtained after each element. If they have, the stand-by-element will be shown regardless of the player’s position in the Bound.
- It’s important to note that the game will only begin to check whether the conditions for the stand-by-element have been reached once its position in the Bound has been reached. It is therefore advisable to place the element with the stand-by-switch at the beginning of the Bound.
- Furthermore, the conditions for stand-by-switch are checked at the transition from one element to the next. An element with a stand-by-switch therefore only appears when the appropriate conditions have been met and the previous element has been concluded.
An example:
Let’s say you’d like to tell your players that they should hurry up if they have been playing for longer than twenty minutes. To do so, you need an element with a stand-by-switch, which you include at the beginning of the Bound. As a condition you include:
- elapsed playing time
- longer than
- 20 minutes.
Every time an element ends, the software will check to see how long the platers have been playing:
- If it’s more than twenty minutes, the switch element will be shown and then element six will be shown.
- If it’s less than twenty minutes, the software will jump directly from element five to element six.
- After element six has been completed, the software checks whether the stand-by-switch should be shown or whether it should precede directly to element 7, and so forth.
Kill Switch
With the option switch ends the Bound you can ensure that the Bound will end automatically after a given element (or stage).
- That means that the Element will be displayed if the conditions of the switch have been fulfilled. After this element (or section) the Bound will end regardless of how many Elements were still planned.
- For example, the switch can be set so that the Bound ends as soon as a player has reached 500 points. This information would then be displayed and the player would be taken to the end of the Bound.

As a licensed user you have the possibility to download the results of your bounds as well as all response media. You can either download all results, a selection or only individual results.
- On the result pages of your bounds you will find a drop down menu with all download options in the upper right corner. Select the desired format of the download. After clicking on a format, the download will start immediately. Depending on how large your result selection is, this may take a moment.
- Basically, the export always contains the results of the respective level. You can always tell in which level you are by the path in the bar. As soon as the dropdown menu is available, you can export the displayed content on this level.
- Tip: If you only want to export selected results, first mark them in the results list and then click on Compare. Then you can export the comparison layer.
- In the single and comparison view, you also have the option to hide all superfluous elements of the bound and only display results.
- You can maximize the comparison view. Click on the small square in the action bar.
Export formats:
- .xlsx files can be displayed as a table in various programs.
- .pdf files are downloaded in a compressed folder. This folder contains a separate result PDF for all selected players.
- Media are also downloaded as a compressed folder. This folder contains all media of your selection. ATTENTION: The larger the selection, the larger the amount of data downloaded.

Instant Accounts*
Users with a teachers license can create accounts for their students without requiring them to register and disclose personal data.
Instant Accounts are directly connected to your own account; all Bounds appear in a separate folder on your Dashboard. Instant Accounts also have access to your media library. Thanks to different permissions, which you can set in the individual Instant Accounts, you retain control over what happens in the accounts.
Creating Groups
- Click on Instant Accounts in the menu on the upper right-hand side.
- Now, click on Create new group.
- Choose a name for the group. As the name will be used in the group’s URL, it must not contain any spaces or special characters.
- Click on the green button labeled, Create a new group.
You can use the same menu to delete groups.
A folder will be created in the Dashboard for every group.
Adding Instant Accounts
If you have created a new group, you automatically get to the group management. In that case, you can ignore the next step.
- To access the group management otherwise, click either on the name of the group or on the gray button Instant Accounts.
- In addition to the Instant Accounts button, you'll also see the "Bounds" button. This will take you directly to the folder containing the Bounds of your Instant Accounts group.
- To create a single instant account, click on Create instant account.
- Enter a username. Again, special characters and spaces may not be used.
- Set a password.
- Set the desired permissions.
- Click on Create instant account.
- To create several instant accounts at once, click on Generate instant accounts.
- Enter the number of desired instant accounts.
- Set the permissions.
- Click on Generate.
The automatically generated instant accounts contain randomly generated names. The passwords are also generated automatically. Names, passwords and permissions can be edited at any time.
Enabling Instant Accounts
Instant Accounts require the users to have a registration link (Login URL), as well as the name and password for the Instant Account.
The login URL can be found in the group management and in the instant account overview.
It’s possible to print a document that has all of the necessary registration information.
- To do so, click on the green button labelled Print.
A PDF document will be downloaded. You can print, cut out the relevant access information, and give it to your users.
Users will arrive at the login page using the link. Once there, they can enter their username and password and confirm Actionbound’s AGB. The user interface is exactly the same as the normal Bound Creator. If you've denied users permissions, some features might be unavailable for them.
Sharing Bounds with Instant Accounts
You can give Instant Accounts permission to edit Bounds.
- To do so, click on the Bound you’d like to share.
- Click on Modify Permissions.
- Select the group and the Instant Account.
The Bound is now available to the Instant Account and can be edited further by that account.
Careful: using this method you can only share each Bound with one Instant Account. The Instant Account edits the same Bound as the main account. No duplicate is produced. It’s also possible, however, to share a Bound with a whole group of Instant Accounts.
- Go to the Bound Dashboard.
- Find the Bound you’d like to share with the group.
- Move the bound to the Instant Account group’s folders.
A duplicate of the Bound will now be created for every account in the group. The Instant Accounts can edit their duplicates.
Starting a Bound Challenge*
As a licensed user, you can allow users to play your Bound as a challenge. That means that the players of a Bound are sorted into groups, so that the results of the challenge are bundled and sent to a designated email address. This feature can be useful in various situations, such as when a school class plays a Bound and the instructors want to use the results in their evaluation of the students. Users can start the Bound Challenge individually.
- Go to your Bound’s official page. It’ll be the URL you selected when you created the Bound. You should also make sure that the Bound is online.
- You can also find the Bound-Page if you click on your Bound on the Dashboard.
- Click on Create Bound Challenge.
- Provide a name for the Bound Challenge, as well as an email address to which the results should be sent.
- A QR-code will be generated. All players of the Bound must use the Actionbound app to scan this code.
The Bound opens normally. Once the players have completed the Bound and uploaded their results, the recipient of the email can view the results. He then has the same possibilities as the author of the Bound (please refer → Bound Results).
Bound Styler*
You can use this premium feature to customize the design of your Bound. You can purchase this feature in addition to the license you already have.
- Click on the Bound whose design you’d like to change in your Dashboard.
- Click on the Settings symbol on the left side of the screen.
- Click on Bound Styler.
- Change the logo of your Bound (will be shown at the start of your Bound) by selecting a file from your media library.
- Change colors by clicking on the color selector.
- You can either select a color from the spectrum or use the pipette tool to select a color from a file open on your screen (only available in iOS). The live preview will show which color you are changing.
- The color tab also allows you to decide whether the check boxes on multiple choice questions should have hard or soft edges.
- You can replace the background with a graphic from your library. Make sure that the font is still legible.
- You can change the font and the size of the font. Please remember that large fonts can be difficult to read on smaller devices.
- You can use the Import feature to copy the styling from another of your Bounds.
