The Buchenwald Concentration Camp - an initial overview

Since July 1937, the Buchenwald concentration camp existed on the mountain ("Ettersberg") near the city of Weimar. By the time of its liberation in April 1945, more than 250.000 people had been imprisoned in the entire Buchenwald complex, which comprised more than 140 subcamps. These prisoners were exploited through forced labour in the camps as well as by many German companies. At least 56.000 people died or were murdered.
