The Buchenwald concentration camp has existed since July 1937 on the Ettersberg near the city of Weimar. By the time of the liberation in April 1945, more than 250,000 people had been imprisoned in the entire Buchenwald complex, which comprised more than 140 subcamps. These prisoners were exploited through forced labour. Many German companies also profited from prisoners' forced labour. At least 56.000 people died or were murdered.
